The Star Explorer
A mounted paper (card) planisphere from the New York (NY) Hayden Planetarium created for the Junior Astronomy Club at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The front of the planisphere includes a brief explanation of how to use the item, and features a moving disc printed with white constellations on a dark blue background. The movement of the constellations on the paper disc correspond with specific months, times and quadrants of the night sky (north, east, south, and west) presented on the area around the disc of constellations. On the reverse side of the planisphere further details on how to use the item and details about where to procure more information about elements of the night sky, along with the following explanation of what a planisphere is is featured: “The Star Explorer shows the principal constellation figures (star groups like the Big Dipper which is a part of Ursa Major) visible from most of the United States and corresponding latitudes of the world. The stars are represented with proper relative brilliance-the brightest ones indicated with Greek letters, alpha (α), beta (β)…”.
