War Diary of 1st Battalion Canadian Scottish Regiment, Vol. 50, October 1, 1943 to October 31, 1943
PublicThe war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Hilsea Barracks, Portsmith and Southampton, England. It has entries about rifle and mortar practice, a lecture about the symptoms of and protection against trench mouth as there has been a few cases in the battalion, another lecture about the dangers of venereal disease, using a sandtable to brief officers about exercises, participating in exercises, moving to an assembly area in Southampton, the new camp having a public address system and the control from it being splendid, the power-plant breaking down for a short time during a film they were watching at the legion, being on boats going back to Hilsea Barracks and many men getting sea sick, apprehending and having a 24 hour guard on Private Glover who was A.W.L. again after being either A.W.L. or imprisoned for that offense for the entire time the battalion has been overseas, a skin inspection as there have been cases of scabies, for the first time having a lecture about deportment when walking out as there had been a series of ill reports about the troops, a gum inspection looking for trench mouth, night training, street fighting and clearing of buildings training, and a signal exercise with laying cable undetected at night, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, strength returns (daily & weekly), training syllabi, administrative memos, exercises, and posting of officers to the Italian Front.
