ABSTRACT: Peter Thornton Maule Maule_P_0569_01.mp3 Family background - Father was a military man Left home at 16 August 30, 1939 joined the Canadian Army October 1940 sent overseas to England In England until 1944 then went to the continent Living conditions and rations while in England When on leave travelled around England and Scotland - had family over there 1st action at Verriers - south of Caen - bad experience; heavy casualties August - Foret de la Londe - five day battle; also heavy casualties Nieuwpoort- liberated - casualties trying to dig Germans out of sand bunkers on the coast Morale: have to keep going can't stop when someone shot down First combat-nothing could really prepare you for the experience Was wounded in Holland Smells of battle - could smell the Germans Talks about trench fighting Many civilians in Holland - people of Nieuwpoort happy when they liberated them Was in Canada for V.E Day Got out of the army but joined the air force a few years later Felt what they were doing during the war was important Took four to five years to readjust to civilian life (a bit jumpy) Would join up again but would not want to fight again
