War Diary of 1st Battalion Canadian Scottish Regiment, Vol. 68, April 1, 1945 to April 30, 1945
The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Emmerich, Germany, Doetinchem, Zevenaar, Steenderen, Zutphen, Wijhe, Zwolle, Siddeburen, Nieuwe Schans, Weener, Leer, . It has entries about having quick Easter Sunday services as they received a move order, crossing back into still enemy-held Holland and enjoying the friendly civilians, moving through Holland and encountering retreating pockets of enemy opposition, dealing with a bridge destroyed by the enemy, the Dutch Underground Movement (N.B.S.) helping the Battalion advance against the enemy, a continuous stream of German prisoners of war and civilian prisoner being dispatched to the "cage", attacking Wagenborgen where the enemy broke around the right flank and cut off one platoon and their HQ building suffering several direct artillery hits and collapsing trapping numerous personnel, the mortars and A/TK crews holding off the enemy as the Battalion reorganized itself after losing HQ and then clearing the town, moving to Veedam and thinking they were going to get a rest but getting a movement order that they will be heading into Germany, not allowing any fraternizing with German civilians, engaging with the enemy along with a Polish Tank Forces, encountering more mines along the dykes and roads than they ever have before, a Wasp being blown up presumably by German civilians so the decision was made to evacuate all civil populations from the forward areas where they had been allowed to stay to care for their homes, starting Operation "Duck" with the objective of taking over Leer, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering casualties and orders.
