An interview/narrative of David Gagliardi's experiences serving in the Naval Reserves. Interview took place on March 13, 2019 in Victoria, B.C.

ABSTRACT: Commodore Gagliardi served from 1978 to 2015 beginning as a diesel mechanic and later becoming a MARS officer. At age 17, he enlisted to HMCS Donnacona, after a friend told him about the Naval Reserves. As an OS diesel mechanic, Commodore Gagliardi learnt much about the engines, which would help him later in his MARS role. He speaks at length about balancing his civilian career with his military life, as well as changes in the military. His explanation of the evolution in the Naval Reserve from Cold War to today was honest, and also descriptive. His career ended when he was asked to retire in 2015, after there were no more positions left for him to serve in. This interview is an honest account of the Naval Reserve. Commodore Gagliardi speaks on the lack of training amongst the leadership in the 1970’s. This was fairly noteworthy, because it helped define the leadership changes since then and how that helped evolve the naval reserve. He was also able to provide feedback on how the naval reserve can operate better. 0:58 – 4:05 NRSTP (Naval Reserve Summer Training Program) discussion. 6:30 – 8:00 Training in the naval reserve and diesel mechanic course. 8:48-10:11 Role of the Canadian naval reserve during the Cold War. 10:12 – 13:05 Difference between naval reserve and regular force. 16:40 – 19:18 Discussion on the gate vessels. 34:20 – 36:55 Offshore supply vessel training prior to the MCDV’s 43:00 – 45:19 Relationship between naval reserve and regular force. 50:00 – 53:40 Changes in naval reserve requirements, due to the introduction of different classes. 53:40 – 56: 20 Introduction of the MCDV’s (Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels) and organizational changes. 1:00:00 – 1:07:15 Naval reserve’s role as mobilization unit for the Manitoba flood. 1:12:24 – 1:17:29 Role as the deputy commander of the western coastal command. 1:20:48 – 1:34:30 Achievements and recommended changes for the naval reserve.
