- July 7, 1952. Left Vancouver on a pleasant bright morning
by Great Northern + made an uneventful trip to Seattle
where we killed 3 hours. Ann [Cowan] seems lacking in
her usual spirits. Had an indifferent lunch
+ remark that U.S. [United States] stations are usually tawdry
+ dirty in comparison with Canadian ones.
Left Seattle by Olympian Hiawatha at 2 o'clock
July 8, 1952. Trip pleasant but uneventful.
July 9. Arrived Chicago about 10 o'clock, warm
day but not as hot as they have been having
it. The heat wave broke yesterday - probably
gave up in disgust in competition with the
Republican presidential nominating convention.
Ann [Cowan] is definitely not well. She sleeps at
every opportunity + has a swelling in the
right submaxillar region. The poor little
tyke is keeping smiling but feels punk.
Entrained for Toronto via C.N.R. [Canadian National Railway]
July 10. Arrived in Toronto some 20 minutes
late + consequently had only a fleeting
glimpse of Pat [Patrick Waldyve Martin] who met us at the
station with our British rail script.
We enjoyed the run through the green
countryside of southern Ontario + arrived
in Montreal on time Phyllis Racey met us
+ took us to their house where Gerald [Racey?]
arrived shortly. We found Ann [Cowan] had a
