July 21. Went out to the university for 9:30
+ met Dr Stevens, Dr Jones the entomologist,
Dr Smythe (Invertebrates) Misses Hay + Birtles
technicians, Mr MacDonald head technician, Miss
Thompson (Secretary) Prof. [Professor] Sherriffs (retired)
+ Prof. [Professor] Ramult (a polish refugee).
The building is a relatively new one +
most attractive on first appearances, though
many of the fittings are a bit archaic. The
seats in the lecture rooms are slightly
modified forms + most uninviting + uncomfortable
looking. With little heat + such seats sleep, as
an escape from intellectual effort, would be
elusive.
July 22-24 We have spent these 3 days in shopping,
cleaning the apartment which was disgracefully
dirty + reflected no credit on our predecessors or
on [Major I.B.C.] Neilson. We have strolled through the
Princes street gardens, teaed with the J.D. [James Duncan]
Cowans and visited Meta [Cowan] in her very
comfortable little apartment. She is a
great scout + most enthusiastic about
her little bit of garden + her window
sill bird feeding station. She has a lot
of lovely furniture + some beautiful
chinese china apparently copied in a rough
way from Crown Derby. The kitchen
arrangements we have seen appall us
