big nesting colonies during the night.
July 13. Foggy almost all day. We cleared Belle
Isle without seeing it about 13:30 + shortly
after passed some magnificent ice bergs.
The tallest one towered 220 feet from the
water. It was very beautiful with a long
tapering spire that emerged from the
mist to leam in the sun above. In
all I counted 24 bergs. The first one was
accompanied by quantities of sea birds
Most of them were herring gulls, and some
200 sat on the ice, but several other
species were noted; viz about 50 fulmars,
4 greater shearwaters + 2 puffins. At noon
our position was 51 [degree symbol] 35' N. 66 [degree symbol], 11' W.[west]
July 14. Cool with light wind. Ann [Cowan] is improving
+ has no fever but we are keeping her
in the cabin where she is reading
steadily. Garry [Cowan] has found some young
friends on board. Our next door neighbors
require a least passing mention. A girl
of 35 +/- + 2 [male symbol] brats of 3 + 4. They are
completely out of control + so is she.
What an abominable example of children
at their worst + a mother to match. They are
Moffats from Vancouver.
The only bird seen all day was an adult
Gannet at 54 [degree symbol] 22', 45 [degree symbol], 23' W.
