  • June 27 [1967] Lake Manyara National Park. For game counts + Biomass East African Wildlife Vol. [Volume] 3 Watson + Turner. Area 30 sq [square] miles Present Numbers: Elephant 320, Buffalo 1000 [+/-], giraffe 52. Lion 53 Impala 300 [+/-] Rhino [Rhinoceros] 40 [+/-] Bush Buck few Water buck few. This seems to be a well organized small park with an amazing biomass. In spite of the large game herds the vegetation seems to be in reasonable condition. There are a number of damaged acacias but I would not say that anything more than say 2% have been killed. Reproduction, however, is very light. It seems to be that Acacia lahai may be an obligate pioneer. Certainly the only young trees I have seen have been in clearings and along the forest edge. Met Ian Hamilton a student of [Nikolaas] Tinbergen's. He is here for two years studying elephant. This evening 4 of us in Ian's Land Rover went out to see his beasts. Frankly I found the experience somewhat nerve wracking. He drove into the open scrub right amongst the feeding herds. We were at times not more than 30' [feet] in any direction from a great assortment of cows + young. He can now recognize about 100 of them by distinctive tusk characteristics or tears in the ears. While we watched they ate constantly from various trees + shrubs. They seemed especially to favour one of the palms. They chopped off whole fronds + chewed them sideways through the mouth. One old girl with a small calf rushed at us for a short distance with her trunk raised, ears out + a great trumpeting. It certainly stimulates
