  • elephant - counted 36 of them including 3 old bulls and a large number of young, some of them very small. We got close enough to get some good photographs + then took off down the road looking for gerenuk. We were most fortunate to come on a pair of them. Exquisite creatures, and watched them for an hour as the male used his periorbitals for marking some sign posts around his territory. They were alarmed by some loud snorts from further up the hill + did no feeding We then carried on to the Kenya border post on the main road between Nairobi and Arusha + then toward Nairobi - On the way we passed many herds of Masai cattle + closer to Nairobi huge barren flats of acacia + grass. Here there were herds of the usual game. It was most surprising to me to see large herds of game Zebra, Tommy [Thompson] + Grants [gazelle] as well as giraffe + ostrich in smaller numbers close alongside a main highway to a big city Arrived in Nairobi about 13:30, got bathed + then went down to the zoology building for mail. June 30, 1967. Nairobi At 8:30 met the rest of the conference visitors at the New Stanly [Stanley] Hotel - a very good spot in the centre of the city. Seems to be new, well appointed + comfortable. Arrivals were Doug Clark, [ J.?] Crutchfield + Mrs., Peter Pearse, [John] Morton Boyd Starker Leopold, Bill Longhurst + Tony de Vos [?] are here on assignments.
