  • Vegetation zones. Peak to 14000' [feet] = Nival Zone. North Slope. 14000-11000 - Alpine zone. 11000-10500 - Heather " 10,500-10000 [+/-] Hagenia - Hyperium 9000-10000 [+/-] Montane forest Ericaceous Zone.[underlined] Erica arborea [underlined], Helichrysum kilimanjari [underlined] Protea kilimandscharica [underlined]. On boggy ground Festuca pilgeri [underlined] + Carex monostachya [underlined] form huge detached clumps I saw occassional [occasional] flowering clumps of Kniphofia rogersi [underlined] and along a small stream photographed a single large plant of the slender stemmed Megaphytic grounded Senecio battiscombei [underlined] Alpine Zone. [underlined] is divisible into an upper + lower sub zone. The lower typified by the low growing (sessile) Senecio brassica [underlined] + the great tussock grasses + the upper by the tall, stout, Senecio keniodendron [underlined] from 11,500' [feet] - 15300' [feet]. Brassica grows on damp ground with standing water almost to soil surface; keniodendron [underlined] on better drained sites that have constant water supply. Lobelia keniensis [underlined] grows along with S. [Senecio] brassica [underlined], in sheltered spots as high as 14,000 ft [feet]. Both these are stoloniferous, sending out creeping stems from the early leaf scars. Lobelia telekii [underlined] is more usually monocarpic. It has long silky bracts, flowers hidden + almost colorless. It usually occurs on well drained sites usually 11,500-15000 ft. [feet] The Helichrysum I collected + photographed at 13300' [feet] is H. [Helichrysum] brownii[?]
