  • Gauguin for example, in the use of the lineal and decorative qualities of the prints. As the East met the West artistically Japanese prints were one of the rich sources of inspira�tion. However, in Japanese prints we also see the impact of the West on the East too. This major exhibition looks atthe development of the history of Japanese printmaking, and it is quickly obvious that the legacy of these artists and their heritage is great. I would like to thank the many people involved in this special exhibition particularly Barry Till, Curator. He with Paula Swart has approached this project with thoroughness and dedication. My thanks go to those individuals who made the project a reality�the lenders. Their sup�port is certainly appreciated. Thanks go too to Jack Guthrie for his undertaking of the translation. I would also like to add my thanks to Barry Till�s, to the staff involved. Bovey, Director September 1986 L�int�r�t port� � l�estampe et aux arts japonais a largement outrepass� les Impressionnistes; cette influence se fait sentir �galement dans l�oeuvre des Post-impressionnistes�chez Van Gogh et Gauguin, par exemple, certaines qualit�s lin�aires et d�coratives rappellent l�estampe japonaise. Au moment de la rencontre artistique entre l�Est et l�Ouest, l�estampe japonaise �tait une des sources d�inspiration les plus riches. Cependant, on constate �galement un contre- courant d�influences dans le domaine de l�estampe, cette fois-ci de l�Occident sur l�Orient. Cette exposition majeure examine l��volution de l�histoire de la xylographie japonaise; il devient vite �vident que le rayonnement de ces artistes et de leur patrimoine est magnifique. J�aimerais remercier tous ceux qui ont par�ticip� � cette exposition sp�ciale, surtout le conservateur Barry Till. Avec la collaboration de Paula Swart, il a abord� ce projet avec d�vouement et minutie. Je remercie ceux qui sont responsables de la r�alisation de notre projet, c�est-�-dire les pr�teurs.
