- Ovis canadensis [underlined]
Devona, May 11/44 [1944]
Census:- On way back from [word crossed out] to Devona
today saw 2 bands not seen yesterday.
They numbered 56 [underlined] head - 39 [female symbol], 2 ad [adult]
[male symbol] 1-5 yr [year][male symbol] 3-3 yr [year] [male symbol] 1-2 yr [year] [male symbol] + 10 lambs
Kills:- found remains of 3 rams
+ a ewe dead at least 2 years.
Injuries:- One ram had jaw badly
ulcerated another had femur
broken + healed + a false acetabulum
developed on the ilium. Both
specimens saved.
Jasper. May 14/44.[1944]
On the slopes adjoining the Buffalo
Prairie trail I counted 55 sheep today
All scattered in 2's + 3's + small
bands of up to 10 head. They included
Males - 21 (1-2 yr [year] old, 3-4's, 2 5's 12 ad [adult];)
Females. 22 - 1 a yearling
Lambs - 0
unknown 12.
Breeding: All ewes seen closely were obviously
pregnant.
I wonder what factors tend to selectively
remove the young. It is unlikely
that cougar + wolves would. Disease
starvation + coyotes would seem to be
the 3 most likely possibilities
