- Lutra canadensis.
Jasper, Alta [Alberta] - Sept [September] 7/45. [1945]
Alec Nelles tells me of watching an
otter under the ice. It entered at
a spring hole + swam along about
walking speed. It came upon
a group of white fish in a
small deeper spot + with a
spurt captured one. It started
back for the air hole but
instead put the fish on the
bottom, exhaled a bubble
under the ice, inhaled it
again, picked up the fish
+ made it to the hole. He
estimates the otter was under the
ice for about 2 minutes.
After eating part of the fish
it put the remainder on the
lake bottom.
