- Watchman L. [Lake] July 26/45 [1945]
Arrived here about 7:30 P.M. all of us
dog tired + wet. Set up camp beside
a cabin occupied last winter by a
poacher. Outside it found carcases [carcasses]
of 9 marten, 2 weasel + a squirrel.
En route saw
3 whitetail deer
1 spruce hen + chicks.
Today Jim [James Simpson] + I hiked over the pass
to the head of Rice Brook then north
+ back to camp along the base of
the mt [mountain]. En route we saw
fresh grizzly tracks, goat caribou
+ deer tracks + 2 bull moose.
Tracks of elk.
Watchman Lake, Thompson Pass, Alta. [Alberta] July 27/45 [1945].
Left camp at 9:30 + climbed the shoulder north
of camp to timberline then proceeded around
to the glacier (Castleguard), crossed this +
thence along the west face of Mt [Mount] Castleguard
to the meadows + campsite of the same
name. Noted signs of goat wintering
along the lower slopes of Castleguard
+ saw 2 there today.
Very little game sign, saw 1 whitetail
fawn, which I collected. Saw no chipmunks
+ but 3 Pikas. Mice abundant everywhere
On the surface of the glacier found a
dead Microtus longicaudus [underlined] + a large canine
tooth, apparently of a long dead carnivore
