  • Journal cabin in 6 hours. The trail was very bad - narrow, rough + marshy + we had a lot of trouble with the packs - 2 horses down two broken lash ropes + one horse - the colt - rolling with the pack on. On the west slope of Helmet Mountain there is some high, grassy range that almost certainly sees an occassional [occasional] band of sheep. The same is true of the slopes immediately across the river from Helmet Mt. [Mountain] The Rocky Valley is very wet + apparently winters elk + moose almost as far up as our camp just below the pass. Game Seen. 2 elk 4 moose 1 deer Rocky Forks July 21/44 [1944] Yesterday rain, thunder + high winds kept me at barracks. Today it began to clear about noon + at 3 o'clock we left camp + hiked up to the head of Deception Creek - time about 2 hours. This creek opens into a fine timberline basin offering excellent summer sheep range. Lots of sheep sign all along the creek + plenty of winter range in
