- Devona May 9, 1944
After 8 days fine weather it started to
rain during the night + in the afternoon
turned to snow. It is now 10 PM +
still snowing, about an inch on the
ground. The wind was brisk + from the
east all afternoon, is now light + from
the north.
For about 3 hours I worked the
flats between here + the Athabasca.
The browse conditions are surprisingly
good + show a marked improvement
over a year ago. The Eleagnus is
not over 50% browsed + there is a
grass carryover of at least 10 to 20%
Certain of the willows in more moist
locations are still alive + these show
a 50% survival of last years growth
The improvement is probably due to
the open winter which permitted the
game to range higher.
Game seen:- 33 deer.
Saw a flock of 18 herring gulls beating
eastward against the wind.
