July 16/44 [1944].
tree line. There are well worn sheep
trails but these must be used mainly
for travel as there is practically
no feed for sheep except at the
extreme S.E. corner. On the west
side of the river the promontorys [promontories]
that jut out eastward between
the tributary rivers all have
their eastern slopes grassy, or
red shale with grass patches.
So far repeated scanning fails to
detect any life or very little
sign of trails. Looking up toward
the head of two west branches of
the Southesk one sees masses of
ice + precipitous walled valleys
that offer no sheep range to
speak of.
Elk are abundant along the valley
floor.

Southesk Lake. July 17/44 [1944]
Fine all day with scattered cumulus clouds
Hiked up to the head of the creek that comes
in from the N [North] just E [East] of Southesk Lake.
From there we climbed the ridge that
divides this creek from the head of the
Restless River - took 2 photographs looking
down the Restless. Here the ridges are
high + steep - goat range rather than
