Just on S [south] side of Bridge across canal
on both banks there is a dense population
of these clams. Largest specimens were
15" [inches] deep in hard clay + measured [space left blank] inches
in shell length. Tip of siphon reddish
brown, majority of length white studded
with dark horny denticles. Base
of siphon for 1 or 2" [inches] above shell
dark blackish brown, tough + wrinkled
Foot more than twice as large as in
Penitella. Diam. [diameter] of foot in 2 1/2 inch
spec [specimens] 1 and, [space left blank] in [space left blank] inch spec. [specimen]
Shells so loosely attached as to be
freely moveable anterior + posterior
Dorsal gap between valves behind umbo
closed by a smooth leathery membrane
In front of umbo a thin blackish
membrane extends over the reflexed
areas of the shell - Considerable
