  • May 23/60 [1960] + 24 + 25. Camped at tip of Rose Spit in the last grove of trees. The forest is almost exclusively spruce on the sandy, well drained areas but in the moist swampy lake depression cedar + western hemlock, also some large crab apples. Where light penetrates the forest floor is covered with a tall clump forming grass or a fine leaved grass. The latter on the drier sites. The mossy sites had Calypso abundant Birds in order of abundance Townsend warbler, Junco, Red crossbill, Song Sparrow, Western flycatcher, Chickadee, Kinglet, yellow ? warbler robin, winter wren. Occassional [occasional] hairy woodpecker + sapsucker, varied thrush, hermit [illegible word] One marten seen, no squirrels. Peromyscus here all had testes scrotal - elsewhere still internal Racoon [raccoon] tracks were on every beach but not very abundant. Otters present.
