Gallinago delicata [underlined]
Sept. [September] 24. Sumas Prairie. In company with
G. [Game] Warden, Cumming. Saw only 6 W [Wilson's] Snipe on
prairie altho [although] we covered nearly 20 miles
Only one taken. Cumming reported he had
not seen very many this season
Oct. [October] 15. Sumas Prairie. Stormy + then
fine.- About 12 or 14 W. [Wilson's] Snipe observed
in swamp grass [illegible word] or Prairie near
Watcombe [Whatcom] Road. 5 Taken by Mr
Chambers. Mr Chambers stated
that about a week previously when
fishing on the [space left blank] River or Slough
he had flushed about 15 W [Wilson's] Snipe.
Mr Caldicott stated that a week
previous to opening of season Oct [October] 15th
he had seen several wisps of from
60 to 75 snipe flung over Prairie
Nov. [November] 7th North end of Sea Island
Foggy + dull. About 40 to 50 W [Wilson's] Snipe
seen flying about in an erratic
manner. Were in flocks of from 12
to 14. - Would fly about + then settle
for a time in the grass + then would
suddenly rise with a great noise
flying. Were being shot at continuously
by hunters who however secured only
few.
Oct. [October] 22. Near Ladner. Fine + bright.
Four seen in fields.
On Nov [November] 7th an old hunter
told me he had seen hundreds
of W [Wilson's] snipe the week previous on Lulu Island + others
confirmed this report.
