The collection of 60,000 skins
is the largest in East Asia +
contains an almost complete series
of Japanese birds + many from
surrounding areas. There
are a many rarities such
as Eskimo Curlew, Carolina
parakeet, Passenger Pigeon +
several S [south] Pacific species
Not many mammals but I did
see the Japan Pika. It looks
almost exactly like brunnescens [underlined]
except for more reddish underparts.
The outfit is interested in
exchanges.
In the afternoon visited
Shinjuku Park to see the
Chrysanthemum show. It was
magnificent. All kinds + many
different forms of presentation.
The ornithology institute also
maintains a field station where
they are carrying on experimentation
with improvement of poultry,
hybridization of poultry + other
galliformes, the influence of
prolactin on the elimination of
broodiness etc.
Offered to see me around the
National Parks + reserves on next
trip.
See if I can exchange copper
pheasant, Japanese pheasant, Baikal teal
tufted duck, Falcipennis
Marginalia: Found only on Hokkaido also [illegible word] + a grouse that looks like Canadensis genus, Falcipennis falcipennis with alternate primaries.
