the evening. Vaughn Williams The Wasp,
San-Saens [Camille Saint-Saens], Carnival of animals,
Beethoven's 5th or Pastoral Symphony,
and - Swan Lake. Enjoyed the program
thoroughly - London Philharmonic
July 21 [1958] London.
Went to several lectures today
and found them disappointing,
little unique or new. A fairly
good paper by a young Russian
on the structure of the skin of whale
Features were
1. Thickening of the corneum + germinatrium
especially on areas of [illegible word]
2. Very close bonding of epidermis
+ dermis by means of long dermal
papillae that penetrate finger-like
deep into the epidermis. In the
shallow water, swift moving species
these are eliptical [elliptical] in cross section
slender + placed narrow axis to
direction of movement. On
Physeter + Hyperodoon [Hyperoodon] they are larger,
[illegible word crossed out] and almost circular in
cross section. Absent in porpoises
3. Longitudinal rugae close together
in the germinatrium?
4. Great abundance of elastic tissue
in dermis
5. Dermis thickened + blubberized
depending upon diving depth.
In the evening attended a showing
of the bathyscaphe film in black
+ white. It was good on structure
of the equipment but showed
very little biology.
A lot of very lovely stuff
in Guy Montforts film on
Wild Spain. Almost all the
shots were taken of birds at
their nests + by far the
best were the raptors sequences
Spanish Imperial Eagle, Short-tailed Eagle,
Black kite, red kite, kestrel +
Gryfon [Griffon] vulture. The bee eater sparrows
were also very good.
