mass with 4 prs. [pairs] of cartilage
tightly linked by muscles and many other
muscles of protraction. The radula
teeth are immoveable on the membrane
+ cannot open + shut. The radula is held
firmly on the tip of the cartilage +
this is forcibly protracted + pushed
forward thus using it as a rasp
The tracks made are thus forwards.
The teeth are much more complex.
Had lunch with Dr Jean
Vinter of Univ. [University] Fed. [federation] of Animal
Welfare + agreed to follow up
with De Vos, Mair, Collier, Connibear,
+ Animal Trap Co - the resting of the
Connibear trap for efficiency +
humanitarian effectiveness.
In afternoon Bill Sladen + his wife
Brenda took us on a delightful
drive through Richmond Park, + to
the chalk hills of the N. [north] downs, beautiful
oak forests + hornbeams gave way
to beeches + birches + the characteristic
chalk loving plants. I photographed
Cirsium acaule , Burnet moth, Box Hill
view (Surrey). Orchis pyramidalis,
Ophrys apis + Phyteuma. as well
as several deer. Did not get
home until after eleven. Took
also the clock at Abbinger [underlined]
Talking to the Russians +
learned that the Russian research
vessel will be in Vancouver in
October.

Attended an excellent symposium
on Neopalina with the main
papers given by Dr K.G. Wingstrand
+ Dr H. Lewche[?]. an Introductory
paper gave the history of the
Monoplacophora from early
Cambrian to apparent extinction
in the Ordovician 300 million
years ago. Regarded as a 6th class
of Molluscs + the most primitive
of all. Apparently the animal forms
