  • for the south. Spotted only 2 deer before Tlell. Camped here for night in the garage May 26 [1960] Drove south to QCC [Queen Charlotte City]. As [Ian McTaggart] Cowan sailed away it began to rain + continued rest of day. Picked up load of mail, dropped off some more equipment at the ranger station in an attempt to have some sort of ease in finding things on board. S.E. erly [southeasterly wind] began to rise up as headed north. Carried on to Massett + as was supper time drove out to local cemetery to cook venison. Forest about us thoroughly moss strewn + gnome like: what a peaceful place to be buried. After supper drove into Hensons to look up Fisheries inspector Andy Skipper Also Henson had a lead on some bats (California). Again spent evening with Hensons, only finally going over to meet [Andy] Skipper who was very affable + agreed to take us out to Langara [Island] middle of next week. Turned Henson down in sleeping in his house, but parked by his garage. May 27 [1960] Breakfast tea with Henson (54 yrs [years], 210 lbs [pounds] stocky, sportsman, bright face, [illegible word], orig. [original]) At Sam Simpson's Cannery, filmed canning of crabs. By time finished, lunch time + couldn't find Walter Feyer to ask whether we could stay at his cabin on McIntosh Meadows. Gordon's garage empty so couldn't fix stove, Post office closed. So went to nearby meadows + had lunch. Also filmed Canada geese + Cranes. In pm. [evening] made our contacts, including Scot McKay of RCMP, cousin of Art Pearson. Then struck off for McIntosh Meadows. Just after turnoff from main road is 20' [foot] beaver dam, made mainly of alder + salal above dam quiet water for long way, almost hidden by tangle of fallen mossy trees. Mud banks + upturned stumps along the edges. Plenty of 'coon [raccoon] + deer tracks. A few indistinct beaver runs thru [through] dense salal. Apparently this food their staple. Alder not touched much tho [though] 2 4' [foot] trees had been taken down. Also an attempt at a Hemlock. Set 5 steel traps for beaver, 2 by an opening we made in the dam. Two secretive Steller's Jays nearby, likely nesting. A shot at one, missed Drove about a mile along into McIntosh Meadows. Road of sawdust necessitated 4 wheel drive. Meadows greatly broken up by forest. At road end a 2 story building, windows gone, used as base camp. Nearby saw a muskrat - + some grass chewing signs, so set another steel trap for it Set our mouse traps in the depressing rain in mossy [words crossed out] in not very mossy, dense hemlock
