  • while all those at Tlell were > 20 gms [grams]. Drove on north, slightly rolling country with couple of deep (100' [foot]) gullies. Ran along the lake just south of Massett At Carson's[?] Rd [road] Garage met Gordon - a likeable fellow. Found Peter Hanson [Henson], the Indian Agent, out. So went to cannery + there met Sam Simpson (the boss) + Ray ___ [space left blank for last name but not filled in]. Ray showed us thru [through] where they can the crabs to 17 can/day. In Black light used to detect flecks of of shells in meat. Later went to Hanson's House. A stocky, friendly man at 50, who has done plenty of big game hunting + has been in QCI [Queen Charlotte Island] for 6 yrs. [years] After [underlined] seeing his extensive marine mollusca collection we were allowed to sit down + talk vertebrates. Paul kept notes while we chattered along. Thinks there still may be Red Deer on Island. After tea (+ supper invitation) headed back south to rendezvous with [Ian McTaggart] Cowan. Parked by the Kumdis #1 Creek. Late but set our traps. (Our creek crosses the H.W. [highway] a few miles south of Pt. [port] Clements) [illegible word] Hensen [Henson]: 52 Swans at Tlell Oct - March Jack Fraser seen in Sandspit a birder. Starlings 2 yrs [years] ago. Eaglets leave nest end May. Percy Williams, Skidegate re [regarding] Elephant Seals, Marble Is [Island]; Charlie Hasty [?] - old fisherman for boat rental. Walter Parson re [regarding] Squirrels - Massett Harry Choquette Pt [Port] Cl. [Clements]: Chipmunks (5) [circled] May 21 [1960], Slept in 'till 8:00. 14 peri [Peromyscus?] in traps. Drove off to meet [Ian McTaggart] Cowan. Arrived at QCC [Queen Charlotte City] at noon. Stopped + skinned mice in the side yard of the Forest Ranger. Kids flocked around to watch us perform our tasks. By 9[?] we drove down to Skidegate dock + parked on the end to skin more mice while waiting. Finially [finally] [Ian McTaggart] Cowan arrived + we made off directly for the north. Camped for night by Watun river + road, about 5 miles south of Massett. Used small red + green hut by road. Supper first. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan strangled a kingfisher on its nest. Set our traps. Weather clear. Found Sapsucker nest about 70' [feet] up At dusk 2-4 blue grouse hooting in scrub spruce forest. Shot one. Saw- whet owls ooting. Cool clear night. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan turned in early, we went onto twelve May 22 [1960] [Ian McTaggart] Cowan up + away before us. Good trap return, especially [Ian McTaggart] Cowan 1 in every 2 traps. As early as possible drove into Massett + loaded up Peter Henson. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan + he had long talk (mostly on molluscs). About noon we 3 left for Rose Pt. [point] Road degenerated into strips of board thru [through] the mossy forest. As we entered the beach drive we had to wait for the tide to drop. A glorious day. The Mts. [mountains] of Alaska + mainland B.C. clearly visible. Nearby the 400' [foot] head (Tow Hill) looms dominantly. Cape Ball. Sup- possedly [supposedly] a falcon nesting here. Now we had lunch (F) [circled]
