- on the beach with [Ian McTaggart] Cowan chasing after mollusks [molluscs]
+ I trying my luck for trout for supper. Got
enough small cutthroat for one meal. About
2 pm began beach drive. Could speed along so
soon arrived at the end of forest. Here we found
an ideal campsite under a wind swept spruce.
Set up tent + made ourselves comfortable. Set
no traps. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan shot a deer (w/ the .22) + Paul [Joslin]
was highly entertained by its copious parasites esp. [especially]
nematodes in cecum - here also a cup of sand.
Magnus' fluke in liver so must be appropriate snail
in ponds. As twilight descended [Ian McTaggart] Cowan and I went
along the beach, pulling up aggates [agates], noting many
otter tracks, flock of semip sandp [semi-palmated sandpipers], small flock of
brant [geese]. No [word crossed out] Brilliant sunset. Mouse skinning bee.
Caught 50 last night - kept us going to midnight
May 23 [1960]
Cloudy. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan + I walked far south looking for
[illegible word] Lake but no luck. Long dunes running into the
spruce - [illegible word] forest made going difficult. High
population of millipedes. Annilimia[?] type without
dry white or white blotched forms. Staggered
the long way back to the beach, laden down
with large Jap [Japanese] glass balls. Paul [Joslin] found some too +
found [illegible word crossed out] use for his balls by sitting on them!
Venison for supper. Campfire. Peaceful.

Clear. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan hiked off south to the martin [marten] traps
(Paul saw a martin [marten]). Here all mice adults, 1 one with
young embryos, and the heaviest mice so far. At Tow Hill
paused while [Ian McTaggart] Cowan went out around the basaltic
plug. Young Varied thrush, W. [winter] Wren with young. Peter [Henson]
reported large colony of cormorants + falcon on cliffs
but [Ian McTaggart] Cowan saw nil. Raven nest with young.
Didn't know whether expected at Bensons [Henson's] for
supper so turned up in mid afternoon to see. We
were. So tiedied [tidied] up by puddle side, [Ian McTaggart] Cowan putting
scruffy us to shame with his blazer, pressed [underlined]
trousers + shave. Sure Peter [Henson] couldn't have cared
less. Bad connection in battery caused annoyance
+ missed out seeing McIntosh meadows, 1 mi [mile] E. [east] of
RCAF [Royal Canadian Air Force] station.
Ben [crossed out] Peter Hensen [Henson] showed us proudly his swan slides
(mostly trumpeter), Brant, etc. Long into evening hear-
ing Peter [Henson] swap hunting exploites [exploits] with [Ian McTaggart] Cowan.
Finally drove east to park on beach for night.
May 25 [1960]
