- Banff
June 3/43 [1943]
week. Feeding on willow, birch +
balsam.
The good elk area apparently
consists of a narrow belt, mostly
on the N [North] side of the Bow + extending
from about 30 miles W. [West] of Banff on
the Lake Louise road to + beyond
Gateway. There are local pockets of
habitable range - as opposite Massive -
on the s [south] side of the river. In all
this region where willow grows
on arid land it is dead or nearly
so + there are very few young
aspens. However on the swampy
areas where willow + birch are
intermingled the willow is holding
its own.
Carrot Creek.
June 4+5. [1943] Yesterday we worked up the
creek about 6 miles and made camp.
on a grassy flat beside the creek.
Altitude 5600'. The party consists
of Warden [Ernest] Stenton, self + 4 horses.
Weather fine when we left Banff
clouding + beginning to rain at about
9 PM. During the night snowed
about 6 inches. Snowed heavily until
noon on the 5th + lightly off + on
during the afternoon. Clearing at sundown
