Today saw 19 elk. 2 sheep, 1 deer.
Warden A.H. White at Decoigne reports seeing
150 elk in 1 herd to the West of the
cabin + that he judged to be about
half the total band.
In august 1941 a large grizzly chased
a cow + calf elk across his cabin
yard.
Six to 8 wolves were roaming the
district. This winter they came round
about once a month, on others as often
as once a week. This winter they killed
two elk + 2 deer within a mile of
the cabin close to the road.
Shot + examined an aged bull elk.
Saw. song sparrows., 6 geese, winter wren
4 bufflehead, 3 mallard.
In evening visited Warden Frank Wells to
get some particulars on game kills:
At mile 30 (near Sunwapta) about 1925
a wolverine killed a moose in deep
crusted snow. Rode the moose until
it tore open the loin.
Astoria River 1936-37 a deer killed
by a lynx. and in 1941 Ralph Wells
and another man found where
a lynx had pulled down a 2 year
old moose. It was free of ticks.
