- Journal June 7/43. [1943]
With aspen groves, pine stands +
one excellent fir stand with
trees 2 ft [feet] through and 50' +/- ft [feet] high.
The region strikes me as
offering only moderately good winter
range for deer + elk. The shortage
of large areas of open grassland
detracts from its value as elk range.
+ the [words crossed out] Browse is not abundant. Willow,
Eleagnus, Cornus + young aspen
is distributed in the depressions
+ is only moderately abundant.
There has been a good carry over
of grass + [illegible word crossed out] browse such
as cornus + salix is used 30% + 25%
resp. [respectively] Prunus 10%, Eleagnus 20%, birch
not at all.
The range would apparently support
about 50% more deer than it now
has provided the elk concentration
remained about the same.
Apparently the bulk, if not all the
elk in the region are bulls.
The rocky slopes with some
open grass + weed slopes below
provides 2nd [second] class summer range
for sheep. There is too much
timber + too much crag rock for
the area to be good sheep range
+ it will probably become less suitable
as forest cover increases.
