Aug. [August] 4/43 [1943]
Took one ram for examination
+ found one spring kill, an adult
ram.
Saw hen ptarmigan + 5 chicks, 1 golden
eagle, several whistlers, 15 or 20
pectoral sandpipers.
Cairn Cabin. Aug [August] 5/43 [1943]
Stormbound. In early evening climbed
knoll behind camp between showers
+ saw 12 ewes, almost certainly
these have been counted before.
Rocky Forks. Aug [August] 6/43 [1943]
Left Cairn Cabin at 11 AM. + rode
through to the cabin here in 4 hours -
distance 21 miles. After we are over
the pass the country becomes progressively
more rocky with steep hillside slopes
many of them grassy. On these however
on the west side we saw only
goats. On the east side there are
some grassy patches high up upon
which warden [Edward] McDonald tells me
that [word crossed out] a few sheep winter. He also
tells me that there are a few sheep
all the way down to about mile 43
+ then there is a gap between the range
+ that around the highway. Also
that last winter for the first time
elk - old bulls - wintered in at Medicine
lake + in as far as Jacques lake.
Has seen sheep in winter on Southesk
