  • Banff. Alta [Alberta] April 28/43 [1943] Further east on the flats along the river + benches adjacent there are signs of former heavy browsing + little sign of shrub + tree recovery. There is grass in excess of present requirements. All the aspens are badly chawed but there is little recent sign. Willows + birches on the bottom are heavily browsed by elk. There is a large area between the highway + the mts [mountains] to the north that is ideal elk range. It seems to be populated close to capacity or to have been so, so recently that there is no sign of recovery as yet. The Carrot Creek valley is a most interesting one, up it are some fair western birch trees, and some Pinus albicaulis [underlined] that are neither of them common in the park. Up as far as the first canyon elk + moose sign was numerous, above that nothing but sheep sign was evident. The valley is very narrow at first but [illegible word crossed out] after 4 miles opens out into a broad basin with grassy slopes. Along the trail we found 2 ram sheep killed by lions last February. They were about 3/4 mile apart + when found only a small part of each had been eaten. Now coyotes have been working on the lower one.
