Banff. B.C. [British Columbia] June 8/43. [1943]
conditions are good enough, or to
pine or aspen. The lower slopes
of Mt [Mount] Wilson + Mt [Mount] Coleman
have light immature stands
of aspen locally + grass pockets
higher up.
The marsh areas extend from about
mile 94 to mile 100 - above that
the valley narrows and the aspens
peter out.
Elk were seen in the Bow Valley
to mile 42. Beyond that some
deer (Mosquito cr. [creek]) + mostly moose were seen
until the Saskatchewan was
reached. Here deer were comparatively
numerous + a fair band of elk
(wardens estimate 100 +/- exist.
Moose were numerous from the
Sask [Saskatchewan] as far as I went. Elk sign
ceased at mile 103 + was scarce
beyond mile 100. There is thus
about 14-15 miles of valley bottom
supporting an elk population beyond
the Sask. [Saskatchewan] crossing. Sign indicated
that the bulk of the population was
down the river from the highway
a distance of 3 miles brings one to
the boundary.
There are some goat on the
Mistaya, Mt [Mount] Wilson + Mt [Mount] Coleman
but they are rare south of these places.
