- June 8/43. [1943]
At Mosquito Cr. [Creek] where only moose
had wintered the tall willow was
browsed about 50% + the low growing
one not at all. Both species
collected
15 mile cabin Spray River [underlined] June 10, 1943
Left Banff this morning at 10 AM
with 10 horses - 2 of them without
loads. At 10:30 it began to rain
+ continued in a downpour
until about 4 P.M. We became
soaked + very cold but thawed
out in the Spray River Cabin.
En route saw
Elk 3 bull.
5 cows
1 calf
15 indet [indeterminate]
Goat 3.
Same local. [locality] [underlined] alt. [altitude] 5400' June 11/43. [1943]
Held up here by incessant rain,
until late afternoon. Worked bench
land + riverbottom on W [West] side of
river + find willows + lonicera browsed
to capacity. Some aspen reproduction but
very little. Even poplars are just holding
their own. I should judge that this
valley for this distance is fully stocked.
Game seen 1 mule deer doe
3 goat (same as yesterday)
24 elk (14 of them probably repeats)
