Banff. Alta. [Alberta] June 8/43 [1943]
As many as 40 sheep have been seen
on the bluffs bordering the Saskatchewan
at the crossing but it is definitely
2nd [second] rate summer range.
Census:- Sheep + all rams at 6 mile
These are a bunch not seen previously
Elk. 24 bulls, all near Banff (12 mile in)
89 cows
5 yearlings
7 newborn calves.
145
Mule deer:- 13 (4 [female symbol], 2 [male symbol]).
Moose:- 10 (4 [male symbol], 4 [female symbol], 2 yearlings)
Whitetail deer 4 all [female symbol]'s 2 at 92 mile.
2 " 96 mile.
Kills 1 moose at mile 72 - cause of death
unknown.
Range Condition:-
At Saskatchewan there was a fair
carry over of grass in the aspen
woods + browse utilized only
about 20%. Plenty of young aspen
coming along in the burn + willow
only lightly browsed.
Stocking about 50% capacity.
an increase of 50% of present stock
could be handled safely I think. If
it goes higher the deer will suffer.
