  • Big Flats, Pipestone R. [River] July 17/43. [1943] Left Siffleur camp at 10 AM + rode over the Pipestone in a freezing drizzle + down to this spot. Arrived at 3 PM. Distance covered about 17 mi [miles]. Cleared up about 3:30 + I hiked up the creek coming in from the east with the high falls on it. Then swung over to the lake at the head of the next creek north. Sheep + goat sign fresh + abundant. This is the westernmost sheep range in the park. Also about the northern limit of Larix Lyalli. Saw 6 whistlers, 1 porcupine. 2 eagles (Pipestone Pass.) 20 Leucosticte several Golden Cr. [Crowned] Gambel, Fox Lincoln, Savannah + Brewers sparrows. Pikas abundant E [East] of here in rock slides. Moose not very abundant in this valley. Nearly all willows are of short species including big catkin, shiny leaf red catkin, dwarf short yellow catkin. Consequently moose winter browse is mostly balsam which in places is heavily browsed. Game Seen:- 3 moose 4 goat 1 deer 2 sheep.
