Re_T Young, Charged with breaking and entering the house of the Rev [Reverend]
Adams, pastor of the Metropolitain Methodist Church, Pandora Street on
the evening of the 27th (Monday) February, also with setting fire
thereto.
The fire Department were called out to a fire #91 Blanchard [Blanshard] St the
residence of the Rev [Reverend] Adams at 9:10 p m they found that some person had
forced the back door and set fire to the house in several of the
rooms. It was subsequently found that a number of valueable papers had b
been stolen.
Accused was seen at the house shortly after its discovery and made
the statement that he was second at the fire, that he was waiting for the
car at the corner when he heard the alarm.
He was cooly walking around the rooms smoking cigarette and sympath_
ising with the pastor and his wife.
He stated to the Detectives the following day after being cautioned
that he was at the social at the Met [Metropolitan] Methodist Church the whole of the
evening so that he could know nothing of the fire and he did not see how
they could prove it against him.
Accused was not at this social.
He went into the Osborne House at about 8.30 had two drinks of whisky,
went out and returned in about three quarters of an hour had another
drink of whisky went out, returned in about two minutes asked if there was
a telephone in the house, was told No and went away in a hurry.
He enquired earlier in the day of a son of the Rev [Reverend] Adams where the
above house was.
He boarded the beacon hill car shortly after ten o'clock and was seen
examininng papers and seemed excited and evidently forgot to get off at his
Street which is the last Street before the end of the car line at Beacon
Hill. He remonstrated with the conductor for not putting him off at his Street
and when he arrived at the terminus, alighted and passed around the car and
got on the then front having passed around the rear end of the car.
It was at this spot some school boys found a Bank book, Bond for $500:00
and other papers stolen from the Adams residence.
Other papers were found near the Methodist Church.
There is conclusive evidence that he is the man who burglarized the
residence of T Martindale at Kane Street on Sunday night during church hours
on which occasion he claims to have been at church all the evening, whilst
the contrary can be proved absolutely. It can be proven that he enquired
for the Rev [Reverend] Adams residence at two or three houses this night.
The Osborne House and the Rev [Reverend] Adams house are within a stones throw
of each other, whilst his house is one block away from the end of car track.
