Transcript
  • Gordon Head Military Camp 1940 to 1946. World War Two was only a few months old when great changes came to the peaceful pastures of Finnerty Road. Following the outbreak of war in September 1939, the Canadian government decided to improve its defences on the Pacific coast. New training camps had to be established all across Canada to prepare recruits for army service. Gordon Head Military Camp was completed in autumnn of 1940. The first recruits arrived in October. Rapid expansion of the army required the training of junior officers and from the spring of 1941 until the fall of 1943, the camp became the Officer's Training Centre of Western Canada. From October 1943 until the end of the war, Gordon Head camp was used for a variety of purposes. There was a top secret underground Naval Communications Centre, a casualty retraining centre and a hospital examination and rehabilitation centre. After the end of the war with Japan in 1945, the camp was used to house and treat thousands of prisoners-of-war returning from Japanese prison camps.
