in the afternoon did some
more skinning.
May 31 [1931] Took a boat trip up to
Ahousat. Leaving Tofino we went
up the inside of Vargas Island + stopped
at the White Rocks off Cat Face Mountain
Here hundreds of Brandt + Baird
cormorants were sitting on the rocks
+ the whole place was lined with
droppings. Found 4 Black Oyster
catchers nests. 2 sets of 3 + 2 of 2
eggs. About 25 gulls nests had
been prepared but as yet no
eggs had been deposited.
We then proceeded to Ahousat where
we had lunch at Gibsons. I
examined the plates of 4 deer
taken in the vicinity. The horns
differed widely. One was a typical
large two pointer. Another was
a medium sized old 2 pointer -
about 2 1/2 to 3" basal circum. [circumference] the
tips of the antlers were flattened
for the terminal inch + showed
two humps at the tip of each.
For the 3rd [third] see sketch, this head
had the horns almost perpendicular
+ parallel + the rear tine longer
higher + more outwardly curved
than the front tine.
Bear + deer common along the river
at the heads of the inlets
