  • May 4 [1930]. Sun. - cooler + cloudy in afternoon. Shot female red squirrel in Tamarak [Tamarack] swamp East. Took groundsquirrel in meadow East. F May 5 [1930]. Went up meadow creek + back to uncut timber on hills west. A great deal of old badger work + some fresh on rolling land covered with buck brush. Groundsquirrels + chipmunks common. Set traps in tamarack area. May 6 [1930]. First Lewis woodpeckers [underlined]. Mr Sadler shot large male badger 30 lbs. [pounds], 5 miles N.W [northwest] of Newgate. Skull smashed to atoms. Animal very fat + in good condition. Hot sunny day. May 7 [1930]. Visited Loon Lake 9 miles N.E [northeast] of Newgate. Redwing Blackbirds [underlined] Red tail Hawks, Song Sparrow [underlined] etc. [etcetera] present. Noticed a few runways of voles in sphagnum bog. Hot sunny day. May 8 [1930]. Set mouse traps at Loon Lake Good weather. May 9 [1930]. Nothing in traps - Mr [Hamilton Mack] Laing took single vole cloudy - high wind
