- and anchored off the S.E. [southeast] side. We then went ashore in a small boat, pulling it up on the rocks. The island is about 8 or 10 acres in extent and about 60 feet in elevation in the middle. The shore very rugged but on the inner slopes there are dense growths of grasses, sedges + other weeds. Among these the puffins + other birds burrow. Our Puffin was captured by hand in one of these places. We found about 15 pairs of Oyster Catchers preparing to nest. A few G.w. [Glaucous-winged] gulls were making their nests but no eggs yet. Pigeon Guillemots, Bairds + Brandts cormorants were very common + could be seen sitting on all the rocks or swimming in the water. Song sparrows + sooty Fox Sparrow were nesting in a few clumps of salal + numerous Winter wren fledgelings were seen a wandering Tattler was secured + two fox sparrows. On the way home we saw Harlequin ducks, Old Squaws, Pacific Loon (one taken) and several rhinocerous [rhinoceros] auklets. The scenery was wonderful. Rugged rocks with the surf
