- June 19 [1931] Weather shows signs
of breaking. Went out to
the Summmers farm at the
end of the Beaver Creek road.
In the evening had dinner
with Mr + Mrs West in Port
Alberni + Mrs. Gertrude Hillas.
At Summers Beaver Cr. [Creek] Alberni Valley, [inserted above] saw male Black
Headed Grosbeak [underlined].
June 20 [1931]. In the morning we packed
a light outfit + leaving Port Alberni at 9:15 we drove over
to Nanaimo picking up Alan
on the noon boat. We then drove out
the Extension road + Nanaimo Falls
road to McDonald's place to find
out the Road to Green Mt [mountain].
McDonald showed us a photograph
of 11 Cow elk taken in May, 1931
on the Elk river (Kennedy River)
He referred us to a friend of his
Ed Torkko who undertook to
show us the way. We proceeded
up the Nanaimo lake road +
up the South Fork to the construction
camp where we left the car. We
then hiked 10 miles up the Nanaimo
S. [South] Fork, crossed Boulder Cr. [Creek] + then
followed Jump Cr. [Creek] to a cabin on
the right of the trail before
reaching Paterson [Patterson] lake. Here
we spent the night
