- 106 Belt Hook Plaque
white jade, length 6.5 cm Late Qing

Rectangular plaque decorated with a landscape scene in slight relief; in the foreground is a pinetree and a thatched pavilion looking out over water and distant mountains; some cloud swirls at the top. The reverse side of the plaque has a flattened stud with yin and yang design; the flattened hook is deco�rated with an archaic dragon head. This is clearly more a decorative than an utilitarian object.
107 Belt Buckle
white jade, length 10 cm Late Qing

Each half of this belt buckle is decorated with a de�sign in thread relief of two facing elongated C- scrolls, separated by a tied rope design with central flower medallion; the hook is shaped like an archa- istic dragon�s head. On the reverse side are studs.

Each end of the belt buckle is decorated with a flat�tened, sinuous zhi dragon in openwork; the hook is shaped like a dragon�s head; there are flattened round studs on the back side. The top part of this belt buckle is artificially stained to an orangy brown colour in imitation of the russet coloured �skin� of river jade, which was more highly prized than quar�ried jade.

This object with double dragon head shaped hooks and the centre of curved shaft surmounted by a squarish flattened zhi dragon in openwork shows how purely decorative the belt hook had become by Qing times. Instead of one there are two hooks, and the stud at the bottom has been dispended with here.

Small snuff bottle of flattened oval shape with small footrim. On the front side is carved a chrysan�themum making use of the brown markings for its leaves, the reverse side shows part of the stem and a leaf.

Wooden screen with panels of carved lacquer with inlay of jade and other precious stones depicting scenes of the famous eighteenth-century Chinese novel The Dream of the Red Chamber. The reverse side has calligraphy on a painted lacquer ground.
