- Rangifer tarandus
Kidluit Bay. July 27 - 29/47 [1947].
Information gleaned from + at the
reindeer roundup.
For sex ratios, mortality etc see
previous pages.
Breeding:-
Breeding takes place in the month
of September with the greatest
activity about the middle of the
month. It extends over into
October with some fertile matings
taking place as late as the second
half of that month. Behavior
during the rut is much the same
as that of caribou.
Births begin in the first week
of April, the majority take place
about mid April with sporadic
births as late as the last week
of May. Twins do occur but
are infrequent.
During the period of fawning
the herd is held in country
providing an abundance of
lichen + presenting a hilly contour
offering as much shelter as possible
The cow at term drops behind
the herd + rejoins it when her
calf is 3 to 6 days old.
