- April 28 [1942] Mr Saunders, head gardener, tells Hardy that water feeding pond comes from overflow from Laundry + hence warmed to some extent. He knows nothing of the origin of the catfish in the pond - they may have been put in by unauthorized person Carp were once introduced, he says, but they all died. April 29 [1942] During the afternoon of this [day] many thousands of geese passed over the city to the north. First noted them on leaving the Buildings at 5 P.M. when many flocks were visible at one time. Most were from 2,000 to 5,000 feet high (at a guess) + flying almost due west, about over Dallas. Rd., apparently following the coast of the Island. Some flocks numbered at least 250 individuals; some numbered many more. One consisted of 25 birds only + lower than the others. Birds could be heard calling. V-formation was seldom perfect; tended to be branched + constantly changing. [drawings of V-formation with branching]
