- Sat. [Saturday] May 31/41 [1941]
Broke camp amidst rain + packed
everything wet.
Drove to Penticton where a cabin
was secured. Met S.J. Darcus,
bird-egg collector + Monk, game
Warden. Supper at Darcus' after
which we looked over his egg collection.
June 1st [first] [1941]
Up + away at 7 A.M. with Darcus,
first up valley of nearby Creek
where we collected 2 chats + lazuli
bunting. Then [illegible word crossed out] to White Lake Valley.
No sage thrashers found. Collected 2
rattlesnakes and a second long-billed
curlew, one of two pair apparently
breeding in this area (The first time
for this valley since 1893 according to
Cde.[Cmmodore] B. Green)
June 2nd [second] Monday [1941]
Broke camp + drove northward
stopping at ponds at Westbank to
collect frogs (Rana pretiosa [underlined]), turtles,
snakes (T. [Thamnophis] sirtalis) [underlined]) and a few leeches.
Stopped at village to see Harold Menzies,
schoolteacher who gave us a scorpion
collected in the village. Drove on to Ferry, Kelowna
+ finally OK [Okanagan] landing where we set up camp
in J.A. Munro's garage. Visited Mr. [Mister] [A.C.] Mackie
of Vernon Prep. [Preparatory] school, Coldstream, who kills
rattlesnakes.
