- Bat - (2) [circled] subsiding. After 1 hr [hour] or so bat was removed + found to be in weakened condition. No longer opened mouth + squeaked as it did all other times but lay quiet. A drop of water was offered on the unsharpened end of a pencil - water entered nostril + caused a sneeze but soon some was lapped by the tongue after which the animal drank greedily both from the pencil drops + from a small pool on the deck. When the pencil end was offered the mouth would open as if in readiness to drink. A meal-worm larva was snipped in half + half was offered. After a couple of licks the insect fragment was taken greedily + contents sucked out - working the shell between the teeth assisted by the facile tongue. - discarded when empty The second half treated the same way. In absence of further insects, an earthworm was cut into short sections - one was taken but discarded shortly. A section was split lengthwise + turned inside out; then was taken readily + cleaned of the insides, the outer wall being discarded. Four or 5 pieces were taken in this manner + the "husks" of two were masticated with great chewing action + were swallowed. In attempting to get bat back into box it took off - flew strongly around
