Amphibia
Three red-legged frogs were seen on
trail (one taken) In all instances
no water was in sight but frogs were
in or near puddles on the trail.
Toads of several sizes were seen all along
the trail. Tere are also common around
Croteau Camp - One caught in mouse trap. -
several seen along lake shore at night.
Hyla - one adult was seen at lakelet
about 3 miles below Croteau Camp. One
was heard at Camp about noon (26th [August, 1943])
Ambystoma [mole salamanders] - larvae, presumably of gracile [underlined] [Northwestern salamander],
are abundant in lake at Croteau Camp.
Many were seen at edge of water by flash lamp
at night. Two were collected on the 1st evening.
They range in size from 2 1/2 to 5 inches
+ are quite wary. Chief food item seems to be
Pisidium [underlined] [small freshwater clams, aka pill/pea clams], shells of which were passed by specimens in confinement.
Ambystoma gracile [underlined] [Northwestern salamander] Three adults were
found under small logs on a damp hillside
sloping to the creek draining the lake at
Croteau Camp.
Size: (1) 140 (2) 144 +(3) 110
Colour: Chocolate brown background with
bronze markings. In the heaviest marked
individual, #2, the markings are small
and irregular giving a reticulated
appearance + are confined mostly to the
