May - June 1941
May 18/41 [1941] Sunday: Left Vancouver with Cowan
about 2 P.M. clear weather. Showers
at Hope. Stopped for night at Big
Horn Auto Camp a few miles west of
Spences Bridge. Hyla croaking in nearby
pond.
19th Left 8 A.M.; turned south at
Spences Bridge for Merritt + Princeton.
En route collected 3 sparrow hawks,
crow, Jay, marsh wren, nest + eggs
of Coot, two male yellow headed black-birds
Wood Pee Wee, Chipmunk, Wandering
garter snake on road, 2 frogs, 8-10
fishes (Col. R. Chub?) [Columbia River chub] in stream flowing into
Similkameen (Beaver dams)
Seen - 3 Loons, Spotted sandpipers, Western +
eastern Kingbirds, Mountain + western bluebirds
15 sparrowhawks (only 1 female; collected),
Burrows [Barrow's] Golden eye, pr [pair] green w. [winged] teal,
pr. [pair] pintail; 4 pr [pair?] Burrow. G. eye [Barrow's golden eye]; 4 prs [pairs] Scaup,
6 prs [word crossed out], drake mallard, 2 prs. [pairs] Buffle head, pr. [pair]
horned grebes. Hairy woodpeckers (1 pr [pair]
with nest of newly hatched young); Rock
rabbit. - 5-6 marmota flaviventris
1 white tailed male deer. on rd [road] to Hedley
Stopped 1 m. [mile] east of Hedley for supper + camp.
