  • Ascaphus truei [Tailed frog] (contd [continued]) Aug [August] 13/42 [1942] Examined captive larvae and found that yearlings were about same size, 27 mm [millimeter] but that 2-year-old was in 4 leg stage. High limbs are strongly developed + used occasionally to push body along bottom or along stone surface Fore limbs used also for same purpose and for balance. The sucker is degenerating but is still used; it seems to have lost some efficiency however. Total length 48 mm [millimeters]. Aug [August] 16 [1942] One yearling was found dead by Pegler + was preserved. T.L. [total length] 25.5 mm [millimeters] Sept [September] 2/42 [1942] The metamorphosing larva at this date shows no sign of the oral sucker The eyes are prominent - Limbs well formed + used for locomotion. Tail still full length (?) and is used for swimming occasionally; fin appears to be degenerating. General colour blackish green with lighter spotting. Sides of body and upper surfaces of limbs with small yellowish green spots. A dark narrow bar across head between the eyes; in front of this the head + snout is of a lighter colour than rest of body.
